Saint Theodosij was born in the first half of the 17th century as the son of a priest and studied at the School of

Theophany, the future Theological Academy of Kiev, which had been founded in the cave lavra, to teach and protect Orthodoxy in the region which was then occupied by Poland. He later became a monk in Lavra and was ordained a deacon by the Metropolitan of Kiev. However, he strived for a life in silence and after a while retired to a small monastery in the Chernigov province, where he became a priest. But his qualities could not remain hidden, and he was appointed abbot of the Korsun monastery near Kiev. He was later appointed head of the famous Vydubytsky Monastery in Kiev, which was almost completely destroyed in the hands of the Polish Catholics.

After his reconstruction efforts, he established an exemplary community that became famous throughout Russia for the beauty of its liturgical celebrations. In 1693 he became Archbishop of Chernigov. He passed away in peace on February 5, 1696 and was canonized on September 9, 1896.
