Saint John was the son of Zebedee and Salome, brother of James the Elder and a fisherman by trade. According to the testimony of the New Testament, he was a disciple of Jesus Christ and is identified in the Christian tradition with the “favourite disciple” of Jesus from the Gospel of John. He is traditionally considered to be the author of the fourth gospel. Because of the lofty theology of his gospel, he is traditionally called John the Theologian. Because of his high theology, he is often depicted as an eagle.
He is considered the patron saint of sculptors, painters, book printers, paper manufacturers, paper makers, bookbinders, booksellers, writers, clerks, civil servants, notaries, theologians, winemakers, butchers, saddlers, glaziers, mirror makers, engravers, candle makers and basket makers; of friendship, of wine; for burns; for good harvest; against hail, poisoning, burns, foot ailments and epilepsy.
Remembrance Day: May 8 and September 26.
On the icon he is depicted with a book and a quill.
