The icon of the Mother of God appeared in the city of Kazan in 1579. The Mother of God appeared three times in a dream to a young girl in Kazan, the nine-year-old Matrona, and asked her to tell the archbishop and the city guides to dig up her icon from the earth. The Blessed Mother designated the place where one should look for her icon under the ashes of a house that had just burned down. But no heed was paid to the girl's words. Then she decided to fulfill the mission of the Blessed Mother with the help of her mother. On July 8, Matronas' mother began digging in the place the daughter showed her. But the icon was not found. After that, Matrona began to dig, and soon the sacred icon appeared. Although the icon had been in the earth, the icon was completely intact and it appeared as if the icon had only just been painted / written.

It was later brought to Moscow and installed in the Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg, built especially for the icon. The Kazan icon of the Mother of God is particularly venerated in Russia. This image can be found in every church, in every believing family. Bridal couples are blessed with the icon of the Mother of God from Kazan, and prayers for the well-being of the family are made in front of her. The Kazan icon of the Mother of God is particularly venerated in Russia. Icon festival: July 8th and October 22nd.

Saint Guria, Archbishop of Kazan (October 4th)
Saint Guria was born in Radonezh and entered the service of Prince Penkov at a young age. Due to a slander he had him imprisoned for 2 years, which he understood and used as an opportunity sent by God for strict asceticism. Miraculously freed from dungeon, he went to the monastery of St. Joseph of Volokolamsk (9.9.) And became a monk. He later headed the monastery as abbot for 10 years, spent 2 years as a hermit and was ordained the first bishop of Kazan in 1552. Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible (1533-1584) had shortly before taken this city from the Tatars, and Guria was commissioned to evangelize the population of the area, which he did with great devotion. He passed away in peace on December 4th  1563.

Saint Hermogen, Bishop of Kazan and later Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia (February 17)

As a priest, St. Hermogen witnessed the wonderful apparition of Our Lady of Kazan and was able to hold her in his hands. In 1589 he was elected Metropolitan of Kazan. He continued the work of evangelization of the Tatars begun by Saint Guria.
